Sexism in Building/construction Industry

There is a huge demand for skilled contractors and women can fill this void. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, women make up only about 9 percent of the construction industry. In the building industry, female isolation is really bad; people would prefer a male contractor who would do shoddy work instead of a female who can do the job much better. It’s just a general concept that women aren’t competent enough to be the contractors, that it’s only a man’s job. In Mountain View builders are mostly men, there are very few women builders working here.

Bob the Builder:

Even creators of bob the builder (cartoon) have promoted his sidekick Wendy to electrical engineer and business partner. However, women in the building industry still have to overcome a lot of bias and sexism. Hashtag #moveoverbob (inspired by the cartoon); Angela Cacace a female builder from NC started this hashtag as a joke when she enrolled in a local building program who has 6 out of 12 female students. She explains all the hindrance and bias she had to face when she first started out as a professional contractor. She worked for free in her starting years just so people would give her work (and to establish the credibility of course). She now owns a company and is inspiring women from all over the world to share their stories. A new generation of female contractors has made a community online where they can support each other to survive and thrive in the industry.

National Association of Women in Construction is a nationwide organization helping and encouraging women to join the construction/building industry. This organization is like a safe haven for women who want to pursue a career as contractors. It has 4845 members all over America and the number is growing every day. Women are more willing to take the risk of joining this industry as they know they’re not alone, they have a support system that will get their work due to recognition. The organization fights the concept that women’s work is of less value than of a man’s. This organization can play a huge role in helping women join the Mountain View Builder industry.

Social Media:

Women from all over the world are using social media as a primary tool to connect with other women in the construction business. Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and some even have their own podcasts to fight this dread of isolation.

In a survey conducted, it was found that women contractors were more understanding, flexible and overall nicer when it came to listening to the customer. Men or women, it is a contractor’s job to understand all the requirements of the customer and address all their concerns. You need to hire a contractor that uses the space efficiently, designs the building efficiently and utilizes the rooms correctly. A contractor who will help build a HOME for you, according to your needs. Breakthrough Builders is a contractor firm that makes great homes and is a prominent name among Mountain View Builders. They also believe in Gender equality and are one of the more tolerant companies in the industry.
